Essay Writing Tutorial Guide for every student

Writing an essay is something that allows you great creativity and an ability to get your thoughts and ideas down on paper.  There are a few guidelines that are important to writing a successful essay, but when it comes to writing assignments, the essay is the least restrictive of all formal writings. 

With an essay, you can have research or not have research.  You can write about your ideas and opinions and use a book, a newspaper article, and/or a website to support those ideas.  An essay is more of an interpretive piece of writing, rather than a factual one.

Instructions & Assignment
Although it may seem intuitive to say “read the instructions and follow the instructions,” all too often students don’t always read or follow instructions.   It is important that the student understands the instructions he/she is given.  This may be the only communication the instructor gives regarding the essay he/she wants you to write.  Therefore, make sure you understand the instructions thoroughly before you leave the teacher’s presence.   Teachers try to be clear and thorough when writing the instructions because they want to make sure that the assignment is well understood.

In addition to reading the instructions, make sure that you understand what the teacher is asking you to do. Although teachers try to be as clear as possible in the instructions, sometimes the assignment needs further explanation, or further interpretation.  Don’t be afraid to ask for further clarification.  Almost always, if you have a question about the assignment somebody else in class has the same or a similar question too.

Due date
When first given a written assignment, see when it is due and use that due date wisely.  The teacher doesn’t give you this due date sometime in the future so that you can wait until the day before it’s due to complete the essay.  The teacher gives you this due date sometime in the future so that you can use the time purposefully. 

No matter when the essay is due, it is important to begin the essay immediately.  That way, if you have any questions regarding the instructions, what’s required of you, the formatting, etc. you can ask the teacher or a friend, relative, etc. for help before the assignment is due.  If you wait until the last moment to start the essay, then you leave no room for yourself to get help if you need help. 

Formatting
When doing a writing assignment, you want to make sure that you understand how the teacher wants you to format the essay.  Most instructors will give you guidelines, like “Veranda 12point font, 1” margins.” Or “Use MLA style formatting.” If the teacher doesn’t give you any formatting information, ask him/her for it.  This is very important because poor formatting can be distracting to the reader and you want the teacher to focus on the content of your essay, not the structure of your essay. 

Spelling, punctuation & grammar
Finally, before you turn in any assignment you want to make sure that there is correct spelling, punctuation and grammar.  No person is a perfect writer, even professional writers!  Make sure you’ve checked your work and have a friend or mentor check it as well.  So often, there will be a mistake on the assignment and we fix that mistake in our head but not on paper.  It is important to have an extra set of eyes to look at your work to be sure your ideas are as clear in your writing as it is in your own head!
